Weekly Theme: During our enrichment time this week we learned about shadows. We learned that you need light and something to block the light to form a shadow. Next Week: We will learn about the sun and moon. If you are a space enthusiast and want to share a craft or lesson, please be our guest any day or time you choose!
Communication Arts: We read The Substitute Groundhog and practiced identifying the beginning and ending of the story. Then we then sequenced the entire story from beginning to end. Next Week: We will activate our schema on the sun, identify the main idea and details of a book, and compare and contrast the sun and the moon. Sight Words: down, here Handwriting/Word Work: Uu, using the words "Groundhog Day" to spell as many words as we can, the word family -ing crossword puzzle. Writing: We used student work to gain ideas how to make writing better suck as using capital letters for emphasis and “you” to get the reader to listen Next Week: We will add warnings, tips, and suggestions to our writing. Math: Most kids know the basic shapes, but can they tell me how they know a circle is a circle? Kids must be able to identify attributes of shapes as well as if it is a 2 or 3-dimensional. This takes practice so we slowed it down a bit to talk through attributes. Next Week: Next Week: We continue with shapes, building them with playdough, creating them on geoboards, and using them to complete a larger shape Several parents sent pictures of their "old" sweetie. They looked great. We have pictures in our hallway where the kids' faces have been aged. Be sure to look at these when you can. Kids had a 100 treat of licorice and cookies and counted to 100 by ones, fives, and tens. The 100th day is a milestone because kids are now in the second half of Kindergarten. The expectations grow as kids are expected to used everything they have learned to grow even more. We have only 73 more days together! The Friendship party date and time are below. I'll send more information next week after I speak with our room mom. Kindergarten kids get to dress as though they are 100 years old! We haven't done this before, but I'm excited to see what they come up with. We will be making a 100 snack, counting and writing numbers to 100, seeing who can count to 100 by fives (not required, but fun), and writing about what we may be doing at the age of 100. If we have any snow days before the 28th, push our 100 Day celebration forward that many days. *McDonalds McTeacher Night has not been rescheduled yet. Theme: Martin Luther King Jr and Diversity. Kids learned that we are all built the same, but we have differences that make us who we are. We read "The Crayon Box That Talked" and discussed how the crayons were all valuable as individuals and as a group. The kids wrote about how they can make the world a better place like Martin Luther King Jr did just by being a good person to others and to use our words when we would like others to understand how we feel. Next Week: Groundhog Day and shadows Math: We ended our unit about adding two numbers together to get a sum. Our next unit is about shapes. Kids will be discussing their attributes and that the name of a shape doesn't change just because it has been turned another way. Writing: We continue to work on How-To books. Kids learned to add labels to their pictures that help the reader understand their directions better. Next week they will remember to use everything they know when writing and create a goal for themselves. We will use mentor texts to find places in our writing we can make better. Writers will also be sure to use the word "you" to read their readers personally. Word Work: The word family -ing has been introduced. Kids will continue to use our word list to recognize spelling patterns and to be careful to be sure a word is the one they read by looking at all of the sounds in the word. High Frequency Words Next Week: come, down, out (Groundhog Day words for writing) Penguins stay warm with their blubber and by huddling.
