Theme: We've had fun learning about frogs and creating the life cycle. We read various non-fiction books about frogs and watched a video of frogs catching food. We learned additional information from PebbleGo. I was able to catch thirty or so tadpoles from our short-lived Willard South pond at the playground doors. These little guys are in a vase in our classroom. We hope to watch their legs develop and their tales disappear as the morph into frogs. Kids compared characteristics of tadpoles versus frogs in a character analysis activity.
Shared Reading: Fish is Fish Communication Arts: schema, word prediction, sequencing, retelling Sight Words: a review of all words from lists A-D. We still need two out of five kids to master these lists for our ice cream party! Handwriting: beginning letters at the top line, forming tall letters from the top to the bottom line, filling the area from the dotted line to the bottom line for shorter letters Writing: Students finished editing speeches and practiced for their moment on stage. They read to classmates and to reading buddies. Fourteen kids read their speech on stage holding the microphone. I was a very proud teacher as I listened to them. Kids with finished speeches they wear able to read ate in the classroom with me and received a treat. Math: we finished Topic 14 about describing objects by measurable attributes and tested Wednesday. Scores are in Mastery Connect. Kids learned that color, air, smell, and wind cannot be measured with a balance scale, measuring cup, or a cube train. Important information *Binders and free class pictures are yours to keep. *Progress Reports will be sent home Friday. All testing results are already in Mastery Connect. You can look any time. *Field Day shirts will be put on your child here on Wednesday (if you ordered one). Everything kids wear that do will most likely be stained by the color sprayed. Send kids in play clothes. *Traci is ordering pizza for kids on the last day (May 19th). Feel free to send money to help if you are able. All families are invited to join us 10:30-12:30. Thank you all for the wonderful Teacher Appreciation gifts. The kids have been so excited to bring gifts and pile them on my desk. My heart is overwhelmed at the love you've shown. Zoo Field Trip Information: *Wear Tiger t-shirts. *Kids need tennis shoes! Sandals and flip flops have caused many falls in the past. *Send a jacket - the temperature is going to be in the low 60s. The morning may be chilly. *Send hats or sunglasses if kids want to bring them. *Lather sunscreen. *We have Community Time until 8:50. Chaperones may meet us at the zoo. *I have school lunches ordered for these kids: Clarity, Cash, Rosalea, Kaison, Aubrey, Xander. Others, please remember to send your child's lunch with a drink and ice pack. Mr. Stockton let every child pick out a book from the book trade. Your child can keep the book even if you didn't send any for the book trade. The district sent a survey to parents last week focused on their child's (children's) teachers. This is meant for teachers to use parent feedback personally for growth. These surveys are also a nice way to hear about things parent appreciate and like to see in teachers. If you haven't had the opportunity to complete the survey, please do so within the week. They are confidential. Theme: Insects and Ladybugs Shared Reading: The Grouchy Ladybug, reading non-fiction insect books for information and restating facts Communication Arts: story elements: characters by name, setting, problem, solution, sequencing Theme: Kids planned and created insects out of various stuff. Getting three body parts was a difficult thing for them to remember. It was a frenzy of crazy. These will be coming home Friday. Thank you Doriel, Jaylynn, Rosalea, and Ryley for bringing items. These kids gave up on their insect so they are not pictured: Cash, Landyn, Brayden Xander. (Gabriel was absent). Writing: We continue Persuasive writing with editing. Students checked their work for three reasons why someone should or should not do what they are suggesting, an idea how to fix a problem, a feeling, and warnings. They have to wrap up their writing by restating the issue. They have been focusing on world problems. Next week they can write about whatever issue they choose. The following week they will write a piece for their summative. Word Families: -et/-en Word Work: Changing letters in a word to form a new word. Handwriting: spacing between words, beginning letters at the top, letter formation the correct size Math: Kids finished Topic 13 and tested on I-pads. Scores are in Mastery Connect. We began Topic 14 "Compare by Length and Height". Their testing will be late next week. The hardest question is listening to two-part directions such as: what is taller than a frog, but shorter than a cow? Kids have four options. They tend to listen to only the first part of the question. I think you all know exactly what I'm saying! There are purple word cards in backpacks today to help with the terms we will be using. Sight Words: Review of lists A-D which are on our word wall for writing use. We played sight word bingo and gave prizes. These kids have mastered the high frequency word lists: Cash, Aubrey, Doriel, Kaison, Clarity, Jaylynn, Ryley, Laura, Isaac, Xander, Korbin, Addison, Christian, Landon. We only need two more kids to reach our goal of 16 out of 19 mastering the lists to have our ice cream party! Upcoming Events: May 5 – Field Trip May 17 – Field Day May 19 – Last Day of School Early Dismissal @ 12:30
Wow! What a fun way to start Teacher Appreciation Week!
Thank you Korbin, Addison, Ryley, Aubrey, Landon, Cash, Rosalea, Isabella, and Jaylynn! Weekly Theme: Butterflies
Shared Reading: Charlie The Caterpillar, The Life Cycle of a Butterfly Communication Arts: sequencing, finding and writing facts, retell, sequencing the life cycle Sight Words: Review of all words, "down" and "saw" Students will know 40 sight words from Kindergarten Lists A-D by the end of the year. Word Family: -en Writing: Kids learned that there are larger problems than those they have been writing about to others in our school. World problems can be littering, people without food or clothing, people suffering from tornado or flood damage, etc. We listened to "Man In The Mirror" to think about what we can do to help solve world problems ourselves. If we try to do what we can do to help others, then those around us may choose to do the same. I loved watching the kids' faces as they took this lesson to heart. We thought of solutions that were feasible and added details to our writing. We also listened to "We Are the World" and talked about how we all can help others in some way, even if we write to those who have the power and money to actually make good things happen. Math: Topic 13: Kids worked with 2D shapes and created 2D shapes by putting together two or more 2D shapes. We will take our Topic 13 assessment on Tuesday and start Topic 14 (out last topic) on Wednesday. Upcoming Events: May 2 – Crazy Sock Day (Donate Pasta) May 5 – Field Trip May 17 – Field Day May 19 – Last Day of School Early Dismissal @ 12:30 |
