One piece of candy may be sent for snack each day next week. I do not want to deal with sugar overload.
Theme: We made observations about the outside and inside of a pumpkin and learned specific names for the parts we observed. We labeled the parts of the pumpkin using these new names. Did you know that a pumpkin has a belly button and why? We learned that pumpkins can be all shapes, colors, and sizes. We worked together to make different parts of the pumpkin life cycle and then put it in the correct order. We also ordered our pumpkins by size. Next week we will activate our schema on spiders, talk about vocabulary words we might see in books about spiders, write down our new learning, and then use our reading strategies to read books about spiders. Reading: We read non-fiction books about pumpkins focusing on non-fiction features we find in them. Bold words give us important words we need to know such as ribs and vine and are often the chapter titles. We read about the sequence in the life cycle of a pumpkin. We learned that we can use transition words (first, next, then, finally) when we sequence. We ended the week by using our reading strategies (Lips the Fish, Eagle Eye, and Rereading) to help us read a new book. Next week we will discuss learning specific information from non-fiction books. Sight Words: we, in Next Week: went, up, and Writing: We talked about what makes writing easy to read and learned that readers want to read our most interesting books - ideas that make us go “oooohh, ooohh, I can’t wait to tell you about this.” Next week we will practice sketching pictures quickly in our rough draft to help us remember our stories, editing writing, making writing easy to read and writing stories readers really want to read. Students will get to share their completed books with the class then begin new narrative stories. Word Work: We made words from the letters in "Pumpkin", changed one letter in a word to a new word (sequence the sound), and practiced repeating words to hear the beginning, middle, and ending sounds. Math: We classified items in several ways and counted them according to the group they belonged to. Ex: brown/not brown, on flowers/not on flowers, have spots/do not have spots. Kids will be practicing making these observations on their own next week. The Topic 5 test will be Thursday. Leader In Me: Habit #3 Put First Things First - We discussed how to prioritize responsibilities to get the tough things done first. The rest is a breeze once the tough things are tackled. Conferences: A copy of the progress report and the link to Mastery Connect will be emailed today. Please review the information provided and have questions ready for our conference. It will be difficult to cram all we want to talk about into 10-12 minutes. I plan to give you an overview of your child's progress quickly, then use the remainder of our time to focus on your questions or concerns. Please understand our time frame is controlled due to families with more than one conference as well as respect for other families. We can schedule a follow-up conference if needed. Your conference time is written in your child's behavior calendar. Our class has several goals in place due to Habit #2 Begin With the End in Mind. *Our class will know all sight words from Lists A and B by December 19th. Only a few kids know all of List A at this time. When we reach our goal, I will provide an ice cream party! *Mrs. Bailey's kids will strive to earn all five special class awards in November. (The class that earned four of the awards always earns above green). We will reach this goal by earning blue, purple, or pink every day in Music, Art, PE, Library, and Computer Lab. We can do this by behaving, following directions, being proactive, having a good attitude, synergizing, thinking win-win, listening, raising hands to talk, sharpening our saws, and KHFAAOOTY. Mrs. Bailey will help by making sure kids get 10 minutes of quiet time, a restroom and drink break on the way, and giving kids a hug as they enter the specials classroom, and keeping kids in the classroom who are making sad choices. The class will be rewarded for earning blue, purple or pink by getting to choose from one of five prize options. Book Fair Dates and Hours Monday, October 31st 8 am to 5 pm Tuesday, November 1st 8 am to 7 pm Wednesday, November 2nd 8 am to 5 pm Thursday, November 3rd 8 am to 7 pm Kids will be allowed to shop during their library time and before school begins. If sending money, please send it in an envelope marked Book Fair. Kids need to check in with me first, choose their lunch, then go to the Book Fair. You may also take your child before or after our conference. BOOK-IT has started! Information was sent about the Pizza Hut program earlier this week. All you have to do is read 10 books with your child, write the titles on the Book-It form sent home, and return it. The reward is a free personal pan pizza coupon for Pizza Hut. These forms will be sent home the first of each month through March. Your child should be reading and read to at least 30 minutes every day. This is a great way to keep track. Forms must be completed and sent home by the last day of the month. Every child who completes the goal of reading 10 books a month will receive a new book from our April book order. Important Dates to Remember
This Week:
Theme: Fall/Leaves: We asked questions then learned the answers by reading non-fiction books. One of our questions was "Why do leaves change color?" A book taught us that the colors have always been under the green, but they can't be seen until the leaf isn't being fed anymore. Next week we will learn about pumpkins. Reading: We read non-fiction books to learn about leaves. We asked questions and found answers in books. We learned that verbs are “action words” and listened for them in "When the Leaf Blew In". We also discussed "Main Idea" and "Supporting Details" of a non-fiction text using items that are related to a specific main idea, Fall. The supporting details that led to the discovery of our main idea were: leaves, hay, a scarecrow, a pumpkin, an apple, an acorn, a turkey, and a squirrel. Next week we will learn to sequence and label the life cycle of a pumpkin. We will also focus on bold words in a non-fiction texts. Sight Words: we, in. We practiced sight words from List A using "Spelling Ladder" Writing: Kids practiced rereading and writing more nicely so others can read their stories. We talked about what makes writing hard to read and what makes a book more fun to read - writing stories that are interesting to others. Next week we will listen for more sounds to add into words and writing complete sentences. Word Work: working with lowercase letters to find their place in the alphabet and letter sounds, pulling initial, medial, and final letters of words based on sounds Math: we compared numbers to 10, and ordered numbers from least to greatest and added one more. We finished Topic 4 and tested over it today. Next week we will begin a Topic 5: Classifying and Counting Data. Leader In Me: We talked more about Habit #2 Begin with the end in mind. Kids set goals for themselves to work toward. With practice and commitment, they will reach their goals! A special thank you to all those who sent in money for our coin drive. Our classroom raised $22.80. Our school raised almost $1900 just during the coin drive. Weekly Theme: Maps & Christopher Columbus - kids shared their knowledge of maps, found Missouri on a map of the United States, identified our state and capital, explored Google Earth to find Willard South, White Water, and Mrs. Bailey's house. We read Me on the Map to learn about our place in the world and made text-to-text connections between this book and A Place Called Home. Reading: Using the student book A Place Called Home students practiced tracking words as text is being read, rereading to check, review of Lips the Fish and Eagle Eye to read words such as "city," "country," "street," comparing non-fiction texts, drawing conclusions. This book will be sent home next week. Be sure to ask your child to read it to you! Sight Words: this, ending -ed is past tense Writing: Using speech bubbles to bring dialogue to life, making writing the best it can be, editing and completing a book. Word Work: using only lowercase letters in writing unless a capital letter is required, using spaces between words, compound words, targeting the initial and final sound of a word, changing one letter in a word to make a new word Math: Comparing numbers 1-10, greater than and less than A Peek at Next Week: Theme: Fall/Leaves Reading: Various Nonfiction Texts - Identifying the topic and supporting details of a text, asking and answering questions about a text Sight Words: we, in Writing: editing writing, making writing easy to read and writing stories readers really want to read. Weekly Theme: Apples - the stages of an apple tree's growth, seasons of the year and how the tree looks in each season. We tested which would make an apple slice turn brown faster: milk, water, lemon juice, soda. The soda dissolved the center quickly turning it brown. We learned there are 7,000 types of apples! Green apples won for the favorite apple taste when compared to red apples. We made applesauce - only 4 kids didn't like it. Reading: Using non-fiction books to learn information about apples and the seasons of a tree, using diagrams to learn, building a tree map to share what we have learned about apples, sequencing letters to spell a word - order of letters does matter! Sight Words: this, is and a review of he, she, is, up, on, went, and using -ing Writing: Add more details to pictures and stories (where, who, what), write and draw so others can see the story in their minds, be brave and attack spelling the best you can, repeat the word over and over clearly to hear sounds Word Work: We continue to use Sound Movers to hear initial, medial, and final letters in words. Kids need practice sounding Alphabet games using the "Get Ready Mat," capital letters, and lowercase letters. Kids are learning to match the order of letters through games like "AlphaNotes," "ABC Melody," "ABC Talk To Me," and "Alphabet Address". We started lowercase letters with i to learn the long vowel sound is marked with a macron, but if it is stopped with a consonant, it is marked with a breve. We used the letter t to show that it stops the i, so it can't be a long vowel any longer. We are practicing "There are 26 letters in the alphabet. There are two types of letters, vowels and consonants. Vowels and open and voiced. Consonants are closed and blocked by the teeth, tongue, or lips. My left hand is my before hand. My right hand is my after hand. A is the initial letter. Z is the final letter. M ad N are the two middle letters, and all the letters between A and Z are medial". Now that's a mouthful! Math: Review of combinations of 10, missing addends, and combinations of 4 with the topic test given on Friday. Results will be in Mastery Connect over the weekend. (When I can get to it!) A Peek at Next Week: Weekly Theme: Maps & Christopher Columbus Reading: tracking Sight Words: this, ending -ed is past tense Writing: Using speech bubbles Word Work: Compound words, changing letters in a word to make a new word, taking letters away from a word to make a new word Math: Beginning Topic 4 - Comparing numbers 0-10 Upcoming Events: Breast Cancer Awareness Goal These families please send $3 Monday: Cash, Clarity, Juliette, Laura, Xander, Lilianna, Rosalea.
