Our "Please let me teach" Chart I started this chart Tuesday to help kids keep track of their own choices. When a child has to be redirected to stay on task or reminded about expected behaviors, a craft stick is inserted into their name slot. When a child has three sticks, their name is moved to yellow on the behavior board. The sticks are removed. If another three sticks are earned, their name is moved to orange. Another three sticks earn red. The first day I had to get more sticks out! Today I didn't need as many :)) Kids who don't have any sticks added all day have a chance to earn Tiger Stripes based on what I've observed throughout the day. Important Dates to Remember No School Friday or Monday. For our Colors theme: Tuesday 8th-wear green, Wednesday wear red, Thursday wear blue, Friday wear yellow Mon. 14th-orange, Tues. 5th-white, Wed. 16th-purple, Thurs. 17th-pink or black, Fri 18th-brown Students will receive their Tiger T-Shirts from me on Tuesday - which are GREEN! Book orders are due Friday, September 11 Picture Day September 17 - information will be sent home before that date Learning this week: Weekly Theme: Nursery Rhymes - Focus rhyme:"Little Miss Muffet". We used the poem to: *Track words by pointing to the word being read *Differentiate letters Aa through Dd in the poem by highlighting each with a specific color **Dd is very difficult to differentiate from b for kids, so it was good exercise *Identify the characters and setting. These are hanging in our hallway. *Discuss rhyming words and voice when reading We also learned "Humpty Dumpty" and had some fun with eggs! We talked about experiments then used eggs to get our answers. Will an egg sit on a brick wall? After discussing how fragile an egg is, we set one on a cardboard brick and watched it fall to the carpet unharmed. We stacked more bricks until we found it would crack a little when falling from several bricks, but the carpet protected it. So, we moved the carpet. The poor little guy cracked more with one brick, and from three bricks his poor guts spilled out. We talked about how the carpet protected the egg. Then we used two types of protective wrap to test the egg's fall again. A sandwich bag and Wal-Mart bag offered very little protection. An egg wrapped in a paper towel then tucked inside a dip container could withstand a fall from over 6 bricks high, but not from over Mrs. Bailey's head. Yes, this little guy died as well. Another question was: Does an egg like pool water or the beach better? Thank you to these families for sending eggs: Alli's, Sam's, Benjamin's, Jacob's, Kristen's, and Andrea's. We also learned "Hey Diddle Diddle" with an A-Z reader, as well as "Hickory Dickory Dock" using Just Kids Dance. Reading: Daily 5 structure: Read to Someone. We discussed how to choose a partner, how to decide which book will be read, how to sit, and voice level. Kids practiced building "stamina" for all three structures. Stamina is doing something for a long period of time without giving up or getting too tired. Once all five structures have been taught, I will beging small group work, then move into reading groups. Kids were taught how to use the Alphabet chart in several ways. This is available on the Learning Links page. Sight Words: Review of: go, to, see, the. New words: all (from "Humpty Dumpty"), this, is, my (My Cc Book). We continue to review as we see these words in our books. Please help your child practice memorizing them. Writing: Continuing one topic kids know about. *Carrying on independently as writers and practiced saying a word slowly, stretching the word, and writing down the sounds heard. *Adding another page to tell more about a topic and staying on one topic for many pages *Adding labels using at least a beginning letter to clarify a picture *Drawing and writing those "hard-to-write" ideas Handwriting and Word Work: Letter Cc, hearing beginning sounds while writing words that begin with /c/, stretching words to hear their letter sounds to write the sounds we hear. Writing numbers 10 - 13. Beginning all letters and numbers at the top and moving the pencil downward to write.
