Many kids had a difficult time getting back into our groove. Regardless, we have a terrific class. I chose to recognize every one of my kids with an award at Community Time this morning. We have a new student who can't be with us much. I talked with the kids about how we need to behave when he can be part of our classroom. Every time this boy comes to be with us, the kids are so kind and gentle. I've been touched by their ability to recognize the boy's special needs, and their willingness to care so deeply. To top off our surprise class award, the kids earned extra recess for being fight free. Yes, I am proud of the little people I share my days with. They have amazing parents who have nurtured these qualities. Thank you. We are celebrating our growth toward our class sight word goal for May: 80% of our class will be able to instantly read 100 of the 110 sight words on the first grade list. We started with 6 kids able to do so, then 7, now 11. This is a year-long goal, but WOW! Eleven kids have already mastered the 110 words. These kids have moved on to the second grade sight word list. What a goal. Again, thank you! Next week we will be learning about.... We discussed Veterans this week in preparation of our celebration November 15th at 2:00. The kids know quite a bit about these special heroes. They wrote an "All About" piece which is posted on our hallway wall. This was a terrific introduction to our new writing focus for second quarter. Next week we begin learning about weather and working on several weather experiments. Topic 4 math assessments were sent home Wednesday. We started Topic 5 in Math. It continues addition and subtraction facts and determining if the answers are true or false. Knowing addition facts under ten fluently is a must. Practice with flash cards can help.
