It's been a tough month! The music program and zoo field trip get the kids wound up, then it all stays wound up until our last day together. The dance and Field Day events on the calendar won't help. Please continue to expect only the best behavior from your child. Today was our best day in a long time thanks to parents. I know my parents are doing their best to support learning. Bless you and thank you!
Theme: Insects and Ladybugs Shared Reading: The Grouchy Ladybug, reading non-fiction insect books for information and restating facts Communication Arts: story elements: characters by name, setting, problem, solution, sequencing Writing: We continue Persuasive writing with editing. Sight Words: a review of lists A-D which are on our word wall for writing use These kids have mastered all 48 words on lists A-D: Sam, Isaac, Jocelyn, and Emma. Math: We continue to work with number bonds and breaking teen numbers into one group of tens and the number in the ones place (place value). Important Dates: May 3 – Hat Day (Bring a canned or boxed food item) May 5 – Sock Hop (cafeteria) 6:00 - 7:30 I will be there! The zoo field trip was awesome! The weather was gorgeous. I owe tremendous thanks to my parent volunteers for keeping the kids safe while exploring the zoo. See pictures below.
Theme: Butterflies Shared Reading: Waiting for Wings, The Life Cycle of a Butterfly, and for fun Charlie the Caterpillar Communication Arts: sequencing a butterfly's life cycle, finding and writing facts learned in non-fiction reading Writing: Persuasive writing: We focused on real world problems for Earth day and how we can fix them. Word Family: -ub Handwriting: Gg, Hh beginning at the top and moving downward as well as placement on lined paper, using spaces between words, using capitals at the beginning of a sentence or for a name Math: Composing and decomposing numbers, combinations of number 10 (number bonds - breaking a number into two parts that together equal that number), story problems, missing addends, teen numbers. Sight Word: "saw" Next Week: Theme: Insects and Ladybugs Shared Reading: The Grouchy Ladybug, reading non-fiction insect books for information and restating facts Communication Arts: story elements: characters by name, setting, problem, solution, sequencing Writing: We continue persuasive writing with editing. Students need at least three reasons why someone should or should not do what they are suggesting, an idea how to fix a problem, a feeling, and warnings in their writing. Pieces should end with restating the problem or question. By now capital letters at the beginning of sentences and punctuation should be happening naturally. Word Family: -in Word Work: Changing letters in a word to form a new word. Handwriting: Ii, Jj beginning at the top and moving the pencil downward. Kids should be recognizing correct placement of letters on lines. Math: Using the strategy "build and identify" starting at ten to total a given teen number, then counting how many more we needed to equal the teen number. We begin with two ten frames, one which is already full of counters. Choose a teen number to represent, then build by adding counters to the second ten frame until the teen number is reached, count how many more counters were needed. Our goal is to instantly know how many counters were needed on the second ten frame without having to count. The kids are learning "place value" by knowing how many tens and ones are in the teen number by looking at the number. Sight Words: "get" and a review of lists A-D Goal: 14 out of 15 students will know ALL words on List D by April 15th. We didn't meet our goal as a class, but so many kids are within a few words of reaching it! As of today these kids have mastered all 48 words on lists A-D: Sam, Isaac, Jocelyn, and Emma. Last week we added Sylayah, Gavin, Alli, and Roosevelt to our list of those who have mastered all 48 words! Testing begins next week for reading level, phonics, and all math standards. Important Dates: April 26 – Tiger Pride Assembly at 2:45 May 3 – Hat Day (Bring a canned or boxed food item) May 5 – Sock Hop (cafeteria) 6:00 - 7:30 I will be there! May 11 – Field Day - watch for information from Coach May 17 – Tiger Pride Assembly @ 2:45 May 20 – LAST DAY OF SCHOOL and early dismissal at 12:30 Communication Arts: Through non-fiction books we learned the functions of each plant part. We charted the jobs of each part. We also practiced listening for important facts and restated those we learned from books about plants.
Enrichment: We made a flower diagram and labeled its parts. We planted bean seeds in a sandwich bag and taped them on the window for light and warmth. We reviewed parts of a plant and read about sunflowers. We colored and sequenced the life cycle of a sunflower. The kids have marigold seeds planted. We are waiting for our little sprouts to pop. The kids enjoyed eating "dirt" with "worms" on Friday to wrap up our unit. Math: We broke a number into 2 groups (5=2+3) and solved for the missing addend (5=2+_). Next week we will solve for the missing addend for sums of 10 and decompose teen numbers (16=10+6). We solved word problems and found the missing addend. We continued to work on finding the missing addend in story problems. Kids are expected to draw their pictures to show their work to solve story problems. They have also been working with number bonds to show how the numbers are related. Writing: We began expanding persuasive writing to include world problems. The kids came up with a list of problems in our world that they can write about. The kids are constantly reminded to reread their writing before continuing. Any sight words used have to be spelled correctly. Next week we will write about how we can help solve those world problems. We also found solutions to our problems in writing. Sight Word: "that" Goal: 14 out of 15 students will know ALL 12 words from List D by April 15th. As of today these kids have mastered all 48 words on lists A-D: Sam, Isaac, Jocelyn, and Emma.
