Weekly Theme: Farm: types of farms, jobs, machinery, animals, foods, seasons
Communication Arts: Read, Cover, Remember (Jot), Retell - farm reports and posters, creating a web of information about one topic and non-fiction reading. We read Mrs. Wishy Washy about three animals who jumped in the mud. Mrs. Wishy Washy gave them each a bath then went into the house. The animals jumped in the mud again. The kids wrote what they thought Mrs. Wishy Washy would do when she saw them. I had to laugh at some. We also ate mud!!! We had real fishing worms. Two actually escaped our mud cups. Kids wrote to tell me they liked my home-made mud, or that they didn't. Sight Words: all, down Goal: 16 out of 19 kids will know at least 40 words from all four word lists before the end of Kindergarten in order for us to celebrate with an ice cream party. We are getting there! We are two kids away from reaching our goal! Word Family: -en Word Work: word ladder, Shrink a Word letter games Handwriting: using lined paper and spacing Writing: Kids continued persuasive writing pieces. As a class we identified problems at school such as running in the hallway, hitting others, taking other kids' supplies, leaving trash on the floor. We discussed ways to solve these issues and who to write to. Kids have been choosing issues they want to address and writing to the person or people that can make a change. They then have to persuade others to see their viewpoint by providing reasons to support it. They give consequences, then possible solutions. Math: Topic Topic 13 Comparing, Analyzing, and Creating shapes. *Job applications were sent home Monday the 24th for May classroom jobs. Please help your child complete their application and return by Thursday. *I left early today due to my husband being stung by a wasp. He is allergic to stings and has to be rushed to a hospital for more medication than an Epi pen and observation. He is home tonight and doing fine. Upcoming Events: May 2- Crazy Sock day (donate pasta) May 5- Kindergarten Field Trip May 17- Field Day Weekly Theme: Oviparous Animals: We chart schema on chickens, sorting animals that lay eggs and those that do not, retelling, and sequencing the life cycle of a chicken.
Shared Reading: Chickens aren't the Only Ones Communication Arts: We worked on the following skills…
Word Families: -ot, -op Handwriting: Using the lines correctly. Capital and tall lowercase letters touch the top and bottom lines. Lowercase letters that are short stop at the dotted line. Always start letters at the top, use spaces between words, and write so others can read what is written. Writing: We will be continuing to work on our persuasive writing. Students have identified a problem around school and are working on coming up with reasons this is a problem and what can be done to fix it. Some examples are: shouting out in class, running in the hallway, yelling in the cafeteria. We will be revising our work and making important words stand out. Math: We will be continuing with Topic 12. This week we will be working mostly with 3D shapes and positional words, such as: behind, beside, in front, between, etc.. **I have zoo permission slips and entrance fees from Korbin, Landon, Jaylynn, Isabella, Xander, and Addison. Communication Arts: Through non-fiction books we learned the functions of each plant part. We charted the jobs of each part. We also practiced listening for important facts and restated those we learned from books about plants. We determined that a main idea of our plant diagram is that plants have many parts. Enrichment: Kids sorted needs and plant parts into two columns. They made a flower diagram and labeled its parts and planted Sunflower seeds in little pots and placed them in our "greenhouse" to observe the water cycle help keep them hydrated. We read about sunflowers then colored and sequenced the life cycle of a sunflower. We also talked about living and non-living things and their needs. Living things need: water, food, sun, and air. We observed and recorded what we noticed with our worms and rock in a fish bowl. The worms moved and ate the granola. They also hid from us by burrowing into the soil. The rock stayed in one spot. Our conclusion is that a worm is living, and a rock is non-living. Math: Topic 12 is about 2-D and 3-D shapes. Kids are learning words such as "flat" for 2-D shapes and "solid" for 3-D shapes. They also learned that squares can be called rectangles due to their four sides and four "vertices" (corners). Diamonds and trapezoids are not rectangles because their vertices and sides do not look the same. Tricky, I know! Writing: Kids learned to reread writing for sight words that may be spelled wrong, then how to look for those words in the room and correct them. They also learned that they need to give many reasons and consequences to support their opinion in order for the reader to care. Some kids are trying to tell stories, but they are learning that they need to write to the person or group of people as though they are standing right beside them. Sight Word: Lists A, B, C We can still have a rock star party when everyone masters these lists! Important Dates: April 13 - Spring pictures May 5 - Kindergarten Field Trip to the zoo 9:00 to 12:45-ish I will need help to keep kids corralled and safe. If you can attend, please let me know.
