The kids have many ideas about how some kids should behave and are writing to them expressing reasons why they should do things or not do things. I even have a few letters that have been written to me! I love this because the kids are seeing the value in writing. They can make a change in their world if they express themselves in the correct way and with supporting reasons. We will be working with making sure writing is easy to read, making important words stand out, adding details toward the reader, including big feelings, and imagining solutions. We can be more persuasive if we provide a feasible solution to a problem. Math: We continue to work with addition and subtraction story problems, showing how those subtracted in a story problem are now gone (x them out, do not erase), modeling story problems, combining or separating situations, and using number bonds for fact families Summer School: Summer school will be in session May 31, 2016 through June 24, 2016. In our classroom I am dealing with kids interrupting lessons to show me a something that has nothing to do with the lesson and kids bossing or bothering others. They earned a two in Art class today. Mrs. Matlock said only two children out of fourteen listened and chose to follow directions. The other twelve chose to directly ignore directions. Please ask your child about Art class and the choices he or she made. With your help, we can get back to learning and using our time wisely. Upcoming Events: March 29 – Tiger Pride Assembly @ 2:45 No one has ordered from the book order, so I'm extending the date to Monday the 21st. Ordering is optional, but I think this week got away from many of us. I know I'm not ready to order. scholastic.com/readingclub - class code GK83B
Weekly Theme: Weather: We learned how clouds are created, how wind helps us, how the water cycle works and three new, long words (evaporation, condensation, precipitation), and types of weather and the seasons they occur in. Students learned how to identify the main idea and use details to remember facts across their fingers. They researched non-fiction texts to identify features we find in them then charted these. Next Week: Oviparous animals: What does "oviparous" mean and what animals are oviparous? Writing This Week: Students began writing “Opinion/Persuasive Papers”. This is a fun unit because kids get to write pieces that are really meaningful to them. We talked about seeing problems and possibilities at school, home, and in the world. We talked about providing consequences to support what we are asking someone to do or not to do. If you see writing coming home from other students to your child, it is from our writing time. Often kids write to someone they want to play with or to someone they are having problems with. We talk about being nice in our writing to get the results we hope for. Next Week: Generating more writing for more causes, social action songs (like the "Make a Circle" song), and rereading to fix up writing. Word Family: -ake fill-in-the-blank, word search Sight Word: was (very tricky) This week kids started writing sight word sentences for morning work. They read the sentence fragment on the smart board and complete it. They always ask me to read the board for them. I won't, and the class has been told not to read it for others as well. They reluctantly give it a try. About 80% of them can read it by themselves! It's fun to watch their eyes light up. Of course, some kids are still having a friend tell them what it says. Handwriting: Revisiting correct formation of letters, making writing readable using spaces and punctuation. Math This Week: Arrangements of 5 or 8 tiles to create several different arrangements. Kids broke the arrangements into two groups to write a number sentence. We discussed arranging objects so we can count correctly and several ways to be sure we are counting correctly. Next Week: Counting accurately to 20, using teen numbers. We have a new class goal for April 16th: 14 out of 15 students will be able to read all words on List D as well as Lists A, B, and C. This is a huge goal, but kids need to know these words to reach Level D or higher on their fourth quarter Progress Report. Mastered List A: 12 Kids out of 15 Mastered List B: 11 Kids out of 15 Mastered List C: 8 Kids out of 15 Mastered List D: 3 kids out of 15 (5 are very close!) Upcoming Events: March 21 – Parent Teacher Conferences: You will be contacted if a conference is needed 100 Tigerrific Tokens Party!!! PJs or costumes (no weapons or masks over the face) and a show-and-tell item. March 24 – Spring Pictures March 25 – NO SCHOOL: Good Friday March 29 – Tiger Pride Assembly @ 2:45 What a crazy week we had! Check out our fun in the pictures below.
The high-frequency check sheet and reading level with explanation were sent home Thursday. The Progress Report will be sent home the week we return from Spring Break. I think it's important for you to know how your child is doing now when you may have time to work on skills. Mastery Connect is always available, but the reading level and high-frequency words known are not recorded there. Weekly Theme: Transportation - Kids brainstormed ways to get from one place to another and categorized them as land, water, or air transportation. They explored with magnets to learn about force and motion, as well as magnetic force and played charades with actions to determine if a "push" or a "pull" was used to make something move. The Drive-In was a terrific way to end the week. The kids were so excited they didn't really watch the movie. They all kept switching where they were sitting to try out others' vehicles! Next Week: Weather - how clouds are created, the water cycle, types of weather and the seasons they happen. We will be working with the identifying the main idea, using details to remember facts, and nonfiction text features. Writing: Kids completed How-To writing pieces and shared them during our Writer's Celebration. Those with books to share were rewarded with a cupcake and a prize from the treasure chest. Next Week: Spring (Wind/Water Cycle)We will be introduced to our final writing unit “Persuasive Papers,” and take the beginning-of-unit writing prompt. Math: Toss the Chips with counters and recording how many yellow/red chips in each toss. The number sentence was written to show that many combinations of numbers can equal the number of chips tossed. Next week: Adding on and modeling fact families for the sums 5 & 8.
