December Book-It lists can be turned in next year when we return Monday January 7th.
Merry Christmas! This week is Holiday Spirit Week. Join in any of the days you choose! For updates on events in our school be sure to check out our Facebook site: Willard South Facebook This week we are enjoying our time together and gearing up for a two week break. The Topic 7 math assessment and writing assessment are due, but otherwise we are making ornaments, reading holiday books, celebrating completed informational books, and checking off our achieved goals. We will be making buddy ornaments with reading buddies Tuesday. I'll be retesting sight words and sending an updated list of your child's success by Friday. Twelve of 16 kids have mastered all four First Grade word lists and are testing on the Second-Grade level. Very impressive! We continue Fast Facts math quizzes daily. The requirement of less than two missed or left unanswered has lifted to less than ten out of twenty-six in two minutes. The kids are hyped about this! The standard is for fluency in addition and subtraction. Success will be recorded on the third quarter report card. Check out our "Snapshots of Fun" page for pictures of events this week. I've already posted a few new pictures from last week and today's pj-day picture. Mr. Bailey and I started it off celebrating our 34th wedding anniversary Saturday. Crazy right? We met on the school bus to Willard in 7th grade. That's even crazier. He's my best friend, and I'm grateful we found each other at such a young age. I've added new pictures to our "Snapshots of Fun" page. Enjoy seeing our kids playing with their reading buddies the day before Thanksgiving break. The kids were all so excited to play together. Pictures of our rainbow science experiment are included as well. Monday I will be absent for a chiropractic appointment that is long overdue. Many pressure points will be relieved and need iced throughout the day. Next week we will be learning about: Reading - Continuing to examine Non-Fiction Text Features together so kids can identify and locate them on their own. When reading non-fiction, kids will use these features to guide their learning and answer questions about the topic. Kids will be assessed Tuesday. We will continue to research these features and re-assess if needed. *During Daily 5 I will begin giving reading assessments using the DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment). You can help your child be more successful by reading with them every day and asking questions about the story read. I am a firm believer in plenty of sleep and lots of hugs. Kids thrive when they know they are valued and that you believe in them. Isn't it nice to know that your child's teacher lives by the same philosophy you do! We get busy and forget these little things sometimes though. Writing - Kids are continuing to add important facts they know about a topic in their "Informative" writing. They have learned: how to chose a "Super Topic" which is a topic they know at least five important facts about, engage the reader with an interesting beginning, start a new page when they change from one fact to another, add more than one sentence to each page to teach others about their topic, illustrate and label illustrations, include a Table of Contents, and end with a wrap-up of what they taught in their writing. WOW! That is quite a bit, right? We take it one day at a time. Phonics - Long/short U: We can make a short u say it's name (become a long vowel sound) by adding a silent e at the end of the word. (ex: "tub" becomes "tube" when the e is added Math - Topic 7 Taking, Recording, and Reading Data using tally marks in a graph and using those marks to create a picture graph. We will review Monday and assess Tuesday. **Fast Facts quizzes - kids will be allowed to skip or miss up to two equations and pass! Science - wrapping up our weather researcher booklet by learning about snow, rain, seasons, and choosing our favorite weather. Mr. Stockton has the Book Fair set up for this week. Kids can shop at the following times/days: *after school each day when Mr. Stockton is finished with car duty *during our Art and Library time on Monday and Tuesday from 12:50-1:45 *during Make-It-Take-It-Give-It Night Tuesday, December 3rd from 6:00 to 7:00 Shopping is not available before school due to the lack of volunteers.
