BOOK ORDERS ARE DUE TODAY BEFORE 2:30
See the "Pictures" page for fun with American Symbols. Theme: Students shared their knowledge about our American flag. They learned meaning behind the big words used and why we show our respect when reciting the "Pledge of Allegiance". They said the Pledge individually for our second quarter Social Studies assessment. Kids also learned about other American symbols: The Statue of Liberty, The Bald Eagle, and The Liberty Bell. We celebrated Veterans' Day with an assembly honoring our own service members. Reading: Kids listened for facts in an informational video, then turned to share with a friend. They then had to draw or write three of these facts for an assessment. Listening proved to be very important in this lesson. The assessment will be results will be entered into Mastery Connect later today. Kids also identified facts in text, located sight words in text, and tracked print. Sight Words: has, the, she, my Writing: We talked about rereading, rereading, and rereading our stories to be sure the flow is great. We also revisited breaking words into syllables to make spelling less scary. Kids reviewed each others' work to nicely point out what words are not readable by others. Handwriting and Word Work: Handwriting is to always begin at the top and move downward! This will be a difficult habit to break. Please be sure your child begins their letters from the top. In work work we began charting works that begin with the letter in our sight word book. I believe this will help those who are struggling with hearing initial, medial, and final sounds in words. We played ABC Talk to Me where kids used dramatic voices to have a conversation - but only using the alphabet! It is quite fun. Math: We practiced checking our work to look for errors and empty spaces where work was forgotten. We also hit counting one group and writing the number, counting another group and writing the number, then counting both groups together to get how many in all. Students practiced using + for "and" and = sign for "is" in an equation (number sentence). We have a class goal: 16 of 20 students will know ALL 12 sight words from lists A and B by December 19. The word lists are under the parent informational links tab under the tab High Frequency Word Lists. At this time, four students have mastered List A. Congratulations to: Clarity, Laura, Isaac, and Christian. Several others are very close. One student has mastered List B as well. Congratulations to Laura for mastering all words from Lists A and B! Ways to help at home: Make flashcards for each sight word list and have your child read through list A and B every night before bed. If your child can successfully read each word in 3 seconds or less have them write a sentence using one of the words each night. Make sure they have spaces between their words, the sight word is spelled correctly, and the sentence has a capital at the beginning and punctuation at the end. Important Dates to Remember November 23rd, 24th, 25th - Thanksgiving Break December 2nd - Topic 6 Math Assessment December 6th - Hat Day for a canned food item December 8th - Make-It Take-It 6:00-7:30 pm December 21st - Early Dismissal at 12:30 December 22nd - Christmas Break begins NoTheme: We read books about owls and bats and then compared and contrasted them. Reading: We read Stellaluna and listed the story elements: characters, setting, problem, solution. Kids have to be able to do this on their own for leveled reading tests. Reading groups started during Daily 5! This is why kids must be on task and working quietly during Daily 5. Sight Word s: can, have, are Writing: We practiced using punctuation in stories and practice rereading stories to make sure they make sense. When writing, we are simply telling a story using normal words - but on paper Word Work: Determining the difference between letters, words, and sentences and organizing words to make a sentence. Kids learned when to say "o" with a long vowel sound versus a short vowel sound. Ordering sentences to make sense. Math: We started Topic 6 "Understand Addition" - joining two groups to decide how many there are in all and representing groups using the symbols + and =. We discussed situations that involve two groups that may be added together. Kids practiced counting, adding, and writing an equation.
