If I didn't contact you for a conference, your child is doing fine. Progress reports went home Friday (unless your child forgot their mail). If you have questions, please contact me or your child's reading teacher. Last week in reading we learned about storms. We discussed different types of storms and that some storms are actually good for us because they provide rain. Kids learned vocabulary words: weather, crystal, electricity, and funnel. We read a book about clouds and different forms you can see in them, then created our own designs and wrote about them. We learned a water cycle song with really big words in it: evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. Using our focus book "Storms" we illustrated parts of a non-fiction text. We also read "Storm is Coming". In this story the animals hear Farmer say that Storm is coming. They worry terribly that Storm is going to get them. At the end they believe that Storm passed them by because the lightning blinded him and the thunder scared him away. Farmer comes to let them out of the barn and all is well again. In writing kids began learning that opinions are personal. No one can tell your opinion is wrong, especially if you can support it with the word "because" and a real reason that makes sense. Opinions can begin with "I think," "I feel," "I believe," I do not like," "I like," and "My favorite". We have started understanding of this unit with games such as "Toe the Line" to step on the line if you agree and "Would you rather?" to make a stand on one option. In both, kids turn to a friend and tell them how they feel then support it with "because......." We will be making a strong point to give at least two reasons for their opinion. Once their opinion and reasons are listed they end their writing by restating their opinion. This is easier than storytelling, but kids often revert to story telling. Most kids will be completing an opinion piece within two days. You can help your child create supporting statements by asking them to tell you why or why not for things they want at home. Word Work: blends: -ck as in "chick," and oo as in "book" and "good" Our math unit has us counting forward to find a number using tens and ones. We count the groups of tens by saying "ten, twenty, thirty" and so on. Sometimes we being with "fifty". This is tricky! Please ask your child to explain their math pages to you to help clear any confusions. Some kids are confusing "seventeen" with "seventy". They don't hear the ending sound. Our assessment is Thursday. Kids will be expected to count items in rows of tens with a few extra ones, fill in missing numbers on a 100s chart, choose the correct numbers for those missing on a 100s chart, color the boxes to show the numbers with a specific number in the ones place (ex: color all the boxes with a four in the ones place - 4, 14, 24), circle the numbers in a row to show the pattern - all of the threes in the 30s row, color numbers between the number in the yellow box and stop at the red box, circle all of the numbers that are missing in the chart. THIS IS ALOT TO ASK! Use pages we completed at school to practice. The homework helps as well. Directions are at the bottom of the pages. PLEASE send coats and gloves to school with your child unless you know it will be over 60 degrees at 11:40. We go outside unless it is raining, snowing, or under 25 degrees with the wind chill or under 32 without a wind. It gets really cold on our playground without a tree barrier. It is sad to see kids with only a sweatshirt on days like today. Important Events: March 28th - Picture Day March 29th - March Book It due March 30th and April 2nd - NO SCHOOL April 2nd - new behavior calendars April 3rd - wear a hat all day for bringing a canned or boxed food item Geez what a busy week! Be sure to check out our pictures below: tornado drill, junk boat building and float test, Literacy Night, and our Drive-In.
We learned about various modes of transportation on land, water, and in the air. We read: Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, If I Built a Car, and Garbage Trucks. We worked on sequencing, reflecting, and visualizing,. Kids learned about buouancy from Bill Nye before their junk-boat design challenge. They were given specific materials they could cut, bend, rubber band, or tape together. After building, we tested boats in water. Most floated easily. Some held a few marbles. Some sank quickly with a marble added. It was fun to watch and we cheered for everyone. We will play with materials more next week to improve designs. Sight Words: Review of List C with practice on List D which are really tough to spell Handwriting Letters: Kids listed words with "th" and "sh" in them and practiced handwriting when spelling them. Word Family: -ed - red, wed, bed, led, sled, fed Monday and Tuesday students were given over an hour to write a "How To" piece for their 3rd quarter assessment. These will be sent home with the rubric when progress reports are sent March 22nd. Scores have been entered in Mastery Connect. When we return from Spring Break, kids will begin Opinion writing. Kids will be asked their opinion on various topics, then asked to explain why they think or feel the way they do. Most kids are writing paragraph with ease at this point. Phonetic spelling is fine unless it is a sight word. Math time was spent re-assessing kids on previous topics for another chance to prove mastery. Updated scores are available in Mastery Connect. We will begin Topic 11 March 19th. The kids really enjoyed relaxing for a change during our DRIVE – IN MOVIE. I saved popcorn from Literacy Night for them which, of course, they sucked down. They watched Finding Dory. Kids were sweet to offer to share their box cars. These vehicles take time to create. Before the movie we had a car show - like the big guys do at Steak N Shake. I hope you enjoyed the activity with your child. Kids who didn't have a vehicle were allowed to sit in our beanbag, on crates, and use our pillows. Upcoming Events: Return from Spring Break March 19th Spring Pictures March 28th No School March 30th HAPPY DANCE! The kids pulled it off! Practices have been so difficult, but the performances yesterday were winners! I was so happy to see the kids take pride in themselves on our stage. DVDs can be ordered throughout the rest of the school year. You will not be turned down. More order forms are being sent home today in case you lost the first form. Simply send your form and $ to school in the behavior folder. I will get it where it needs to go. It will take time to burn them, so please be patient. Visit our Facebook site for pictures!!!
